Summer writing workshops:

Rhodes College offers a writing program

Iowa is great!   The Writers Workshop is in the Masters Program.

Also, try Kenyon and Washington College, MD.

Iowa has MANY summer camp and program opportunities available to students. With regards to the IYWS, here is some information for you. It may be a repeat of what is being sent to you, but at least you will have it.
I am going to assume that you are talking about the summer program, Iowa Young Writer's Studio. At first, I thought you had questions about the actual

The Iowa Young Writer's Studio is a two-week program for highly motivated high school students. Participants focus on poetry, fiction or creative writing. Students are expected to write every day. Class time is divided between discussing literature, workshopping student work, and completing writing exercises. Program faculty is made up of graduates from the University's renowned Writers' Workshop. Open to students who have completed 10th-12th grade. Interested students must complete a formal application.

I know that Iowa has a renown writing program, so I bet the
writer's workshop is a good one.

It [Iowa] has a long-honored history. One of my favorite writers, John Irving (Cider
House Rules, A Prayer for Owen Meany, etc.) taught during the summer there at
one time I do believe. He relates this in one of his short stories.

U. Iowa is a wonderful school for creative writing and a great place to
spend the summer! Iowa City's a good college town & safe, so I wouldn't
hesitate to send a h.s. student there. I have multiple students at Iowa all
the time, and they love it; I also have had a few kids admitted there for
college in their "summer bridge" program (not the right name) & they loved
their experience.

Tufts also has a summer writing program, but I don't remember what its focus
is.

I am coordinating a writers’ conference at Eugene Lang College in New York City. The 9th annual Young Writers’ Conference, Youth Writing the New Millenium , will be held on Saturday, May 19th, 2001 from 9am-4:30pm. The day-long program is open to high school sophomores and juniors. If you have any students who would be interested in the program, please contact me via email at pozenske@newschool.edu. I would be more than happy to send your school a poster with some invitations, and add the student(s) to the mailing list.

Eugene Lang College is a progressive liberal arts college located in Greenwich Village, New York. We offer an interdisciplinary, writing intensive curriculum. The workshops for the Young Writers’ Conference are instructed by Lang faculty, staff, and students, as well as well known writers in the community.

U of Virginia! The contact is Margo Figgins.

[Iowa] very prestigous, and then also by "radio accident". The NPR radio show, "Watd'ya Know", was braodcast from Univ. of Iowa one afternoon and they interviewed the director of the program there. He and the program were extremely impressive. They have no clear explanantion as to why Iowa attracts so many great writers, except that there was one writer from there who went on to great fame and ever since then people have come there as a sort of writing mecca.

Iowa's is one of the best.

Since it [Iowa] is here on campus, I am actually pretty familiar with the Writers Workshop! Are there specific questions I can help you with?

Screen writing responses:

Iowa is great!   The Writers Workshop is in the Masters Program.

At Drexel University in Philadelphia we have a Dramatic
Writing program as part of our College of Media Arts and Design, which is
designed for students who are interested in screenplay writing. It is a
small program, but quite excellent. The program chair is a Hollywood
screenplay writer himself and is wonderful!

University of Michigan has an excellent program in screenwriting,
housed in our Film & Video Studies program within the College of
Literature, Science & the Arts.

There are a variety of options here at Southern Illinois University Carbondale within our English, Theater, Radio/TV, and Cinema/Photography departments.

Chapman in Orange, CA has a screenwriting major and a really strong film program in general. Not many schools have an actual screenwriting major...

Pfeiffer University offers Screenwriting as a minor, which is part of a
good communication/English department.

UNC Wilmington has a film studies major, and as part of our creative
writing program, a screen writing course, and independent study
options. We do not have a concentration or major however. In addition, we
have a major movie studio in Wilmington, and Frank Capri Jr. on our
faculty.
